My DNS server changed when I connected to VPN. Why?

All of our protocols (OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, IPSec, IKeV2) force your ISP’s DNS to be changed to our network’s own DNS servers. From our observations, they have a positive impact on the availability of websites and therefore we recommend using these DNS servers.

You can also use DNS servers from Google DNS or OpenDNS without connecting to VPN, by manually entering them in your network card settings.

  • Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

If you want to change the DNS to any other, but you don’t know how, use our step-by-step instructions with images.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when using ALTVPN DNS servers:

  • Security: Our DNS servers are secure and will not track your online activity.
  • Privacy: Our DNS servers do not log your DNS queries.
  • Performance: Our DNS servers are optimized for speed and reliability.

If you have any questions about using ALTVPN DNS servers, please contact our support team.
